Red Riding Hood
“Can I make a promise? Don't die, no matter who."
There is a story told that Deep in the forest is the home of the evil wolf. that kills everyone who passes through its territory. Even the most skilled hunter in the village fell prey to it and became disabled and unable to return to hunting.
The stories continued to be embellished. The most ironic thing in Jinhwan's mind was that the wolf especially liked to eat the flesh of children. Most parents forbade their children to play in the forest. But all of that is just a story. When the wolf said was sitting right in front of him.
Sitting looking at him with curious eyes that made the person being looked at reach out and gently stroke his dark hair.
“Why do you look like that?”
“...Just wanted to know what you were doing.”
The wolf said, his handsome face moving closer to him so he could clearly see what he was cooking. In the large pot, Jinhwan was simmering a vegetable stew to serve for today's dinner.
Vegetable stew, yes, who knew? The evil wolf that everyone tells stories about is actually a vegetarian who absolutely hates eating meat.
But the only person who knows this might be him. The person who raised this puppy from the time he was as big as the palm of his hand. Until now he was taller than him. I don't know how from having to look down at this kid while eating. It turned out that the other person was the one who looked down at him while tasting the soup in the pot instead.
The tip of the nose is high and sniffs. before turning to inhale the sweet scent from the other person's light-colored hair instead Jinhwan frowned at the other person's smoothness. Raise your free hand and lightly tap your forehead.
“Go to the table, do you want to eat?”
The audience stood up straight and hurried to pick up the dishes and prepare the table for dinner. Jinhwan chuckled at his eager expression. before glancing at the sky outside, which was faintly visible from the small window of this house
The sky was a fiery red, as if the world was on fire.
Red… no different from his current cloak.
Dinner finished with the owner's smile baring his teeth to the point of Jinhwan's disgust. before asking to go back to his own home in the city
“Are you coming back now?”
“Um,” the older man nodded. “You don't have to deliver. I walked back myself I'm already used to it.”
"No, I'll go with you," another opposition voice sternly said. Therefore, Jinhwan allowed the wolf in front of him to follow behind himself along the road to the city.
Jinhwan's relationship with the wolf behind him is strange… The handsome wolf's real name is Junhoe. Jin-hwan found Jun-hwe as a dying wolf cub at the edge of the forest many years ago. So he picked them up and raised them until they grew up and were able to go back to their lives and released them into the wild. He never thought that one day Junhoe would come back to him again and bring him to his small house. After that, they kept seeing each other without anyone knowing.
Jinhwan has to sneak into the forest without being seen by the townspeople because everyone says the forest is a forbidden area. If you enter and no survivor comes out If Jinhwan walked in and out like normal, it would easily raise the suspicion of the entire village. Therefore, from time immemorial, he always came out to Junhoe early in the morning and returned at dusk. will not be noticed
However, it seemed like today was not like any other day.
“Stop it first.”
Junhoe whispered to him before pulling one arm close to him. The audience froze, glancing at the taller man confusedly.
"Why?"
“There's something strange…”
The smaller man frowned. Before listening, he listened to some sounds not too far away.
“It must be in here.”
“That wolf killed my child.”
“That Jinhwan kid goes in every day, I see.”
“Or it will be the same thing.”
“That child has no relatives anywhere. Or is it really a relative of that evil wolf?”
A conversation that made my face turn pale. The two of them immediately turned to look at each other.
"...what happened?"
“Someone must have seen you come in,” Junhoe whispered, “What do we do now? Should we go back in first?”
“Probably so, but…” Jinhwan pursed his lips. “I think they definitely need to do more.”
The sound of the rumbling was getting closer and closer, and both of them were startled. Junhoe suddenly locked eyes with a person coming towards him. In his hand was a long spear that, just seeing it, sent shivers through his body.
They will kill us.
A vengeance flashed in the opposite pair's eyes. Even though I don't know why I have to be a victim. But Junhoe and Jinhwan immediately grabbed each other's hands and ran back into the forest.
The wolf's legs were longer than his, so he could take longer steps. Meanwhile, Jinhwan had to try to speed up his pace in order to keep up. In the end, Junhoe couldn't stand it. Scoop him up by the crook of his legs and shoulders in a princess pose. before running as fast as a four-legged animal should
Jinhwan looked up at the other person who had a serious expression just like his own. They don't know what happened. But right now, the entire village acted as if they were ready to kill the wolf race. And probably wouldn't listen to any of his excuses. The only thing that could be done now was to run endlessly.
Still, there was some good fortune. Human bipeds cannot be as fast or strong as wolves, which are instinctive hunters. They were far behind the sound of the footsteps of dozens of people and their torches. only to find himself tens of miles away from Junhoe's house.
The sky turned black and was lit up with twinkling stars. Jinhwan looked at them for a bit and then looked back at the person who had changed from running to walking quickly.
“...Safe, right?”
“Just for now,” Junhoe replied softly. “They probably killed him. If you don't see the corpse, you won't quit.”
“So what should I do?”
“I don't want you to get in trouble at all.”
"I don't want you to die."
Junhoe stopped walking.
Jinhwan looked into his light-colored eyes in surprise. As Junhoe slowly let him step on the ground again.
Looking at the other person's harsh expression, he couldn't help but sigh. Jinhwan grabbed the rough hand of the person in front of him and spoke softly.
“Can you promise?”
"Don't die, no matter who."
The audience glanced at him. before raising her other hand to hold his hand in response. Then she bent down and kissed the back of his hand gently, as if keeping a promise.
Promises... which will never come true
Jinhwan was already asleep. A small figure wearing a red cloak hugged himself under the tree. They didn't have enough dry branches to start a fire. But luckily the weather was not very cold. Even so, it was still too cold for a normal human to let go of. The young wolf's fingertips reached out and gently touched the tips of the light-colored hair beneath the red cloak. I don't even know what kind of expression I have on my face.
What happened?
he asked himself, in just one day the peace in his life would be shattered. The only happiness that was meeting Jinhwan every day was about to disappear. Junhoe had a hunch that worse things were coming their way.
The young man moved closer. Embrace that little body. Hopefully the warmth will make the person in front of you a bit more comfortable.
They're not wrong.
Why do you have to escape?
He didn't understand at all.
If you go talk to humans now Will you understand?
"...do not"
A small hand grabbed his arm as Junhoe made to move away. The other's eyes looked at him before he buried his face in his shoulder. “Wherever you go, don't go.”
“...Brother,” he called out to the other person in a low voice. Meanwhile, a small hand wrapped around his body and hugged him tighter than before.
because they all felt some bad omen
Maybe this is the last time I'll ever do this.
sometimes...
Junhoe couldn't remember how many days they had been running.
It's weeks and months. All I know is that a lot of time has passed. For him, it may not be that serious. But for Jinhwan… things are starting to get worse.
Jinhwan is alone. My parents died a long time ago and I have no relatives anywhere. He was a child with a weak immune system, so he was smaller than he should have been. Taking the other person running around like this would slowly cause his delicate body to deteriorate.
His forehead was pressed close as Junhoe felt the heat from the other person's body. The young wolf frowned, “Very high fever.”
“Um…” The little man moaned in a low voice. “Sleep and it will go away.”
Junhoe doesn't think like that at all.
He worriedly looked at the other person's flushed cheeks and warm breath. Slowly, Jinhwan moved his face to bite into his red lips from the fever, and Jinhwan immediately pushed him away.
"I'll get the flu"
“It's okay,” Junhoe said. “The wolf's immune system is very strong.”
“Play with the dog, the dog clearly licks its lips.”
"this…"
With sterility So I gently drove the tip of that small nose.
Jinhwan laughed, although the clear sound was no more than the sound of the wind whistling. Junhoe hugged the other's body, hoping for warmth. Even today I can start a fire. But Jinhwan's fever and physical condition could not be reassured.
“You need to get better quickly,” he whispered. “We have to survive together.”
“...Where should we go?” Jinhwan said with his eyes closed.
“...Is the seaside good?”
“Do you want to be a sea dog?”
“...hey…”
“Just kidding,” the sick man laughed. “That's good, sea. I want to wake up and see the sunrise from the sea.”
“Um…” Junhoe nodded. He bent down and gently touched her forehead, "Let's go together."
This world cannot be as desired. Sometimes God plays with our lives until it hurts. The suffering of escaping fate doesn't make Junhoe want to cry.
The torrential rain seemed to aggravate the wound in his heart.
Even though he was trying to use his body to shield himself from getting the person in his arms wet. But it doesn't seem to help much.
He was afraid that Jinhwan would get wet and then get cold and then get sick.
But it doesn't seem necessary anymore.
Because Jinhwan couldn't feel anything anymore.
Junhoe didn't know when it happened.
He just ran with Jinhwan's body on his back. They kept running until they smelled the scent of the sea. Junhoe quickened his pace. An image of a wide sea appeared before the eyes. Suddenly, a rumbling sound of thunder sounded from above. But Junhoe didn't care.
He turned around and waited to hear the excited sounds of the people on his back. But what was perceived was only silence.
And since when? Since when had he not heard the heartbeat of the person behind him?
“Brother…” His voice trembled. His face was wet from the rain and there might have been tears that had flowed down without him knowing. “Hyung… don't do this.”
There was no response.
Jinhwan in his arms closed his eyes. The lips were slightly parted, as if a person was asleep. If only I could breathe and hear my heartbeat like a living person.
A wolf like him had never seen a dead person.
But he never dreamed that Jinhwan must be seen in this condition
“We made a promise, didn't we?”
Why don't you keep your promise?
Why are we together?
He brought him to the sea.
Let's wake up and watch the sunrise together.
“Brother Jinhwan…”
Maybe it was the stupidest thing ever.
He hugged the breathless body of the person in front of him and cried.
Loud sobs echoed across the wide, deserted beach. Even as the first sunlight rose from the horizon and cast an orange glow across the land and water, But it all turned out to be meaningless.
What did we escape for?
All that was done seemed to lose the value of the action.
“I'm really glad I decided to keep you.”
“Did you know? I have no one, no parents, no relatives. I don't have any friends either. You'll be all that for me, right?"
“You don't have anyone either. So we're together. It's the best.”
And on the day that the other person is no longer here What should he do?
The sky was now bright, but Junhoe's mind was getting darker and darker.
What is the reason for all this?
The young wolf sighed.
“It's all because…”
Those people
It is said that when the source of the error cannot be found We often blame someone.
And this time, Junhoe had already decided who should pay the price.
“I won't let it end like this…” He said softly against the wind and sea waves. “Someone must pay the price.”
So he…
