Before the moonlight disappears
"The moon is beautiful, don't you think?"
"Um," I answered quietly to the person lying on my lap before asking further,
"Are you excited?"
Shi made a face in his mind before replying in a soft voice.
"Just a little....you...ok."
"Okay, why wouldn't it be okay? At least I get to spend time with you before I don't have to live like this anymore."
"Or should I cancel the wedding?"
"You won't do it."
Silence reigned between the two of us for a long time, the gentle breeze blowing, making the coldness deep in our hearts, the sound of crickets chirping loudly as if it were a countdown timer. As the moonlight faded and turned into a shining sun, our time would probably end here before the young man now lying on my lap would become the bridegroom of this perfect young woman.
“I want to tell you that I have liked you for a long time. If you had just told me that you liked me too, we would have been together a lot longer. I probably won't marry Pam.” Shi shifted her gaze from the moon to meet his, a gaze that was as gentle and painful as the person he was staring at.
