Moving On.

“Are you getting thinner?”

A young man in cartoon-patterned pajamas looked up at his younger brother, who was looking at him worriedly. Without stopping his hand from taking out the food box from the refrigerator.

"Not at all. I think you've even gotten fatter."

“Where are you, Nat?” Nong Ji mouthed in displeasure and walked straight to the kitchen to help set the table for the two of them. “Just a little more and you will become a walking skeleton.”

"Hey, how can you say that to me?" Nat said then turned and lightly kissed her younger sibling's forehead. But a smile appeared on his face. "I'm sorry."

“I'm just worried.” Than shrugged before pulling out two glasses of water. “What do you want? Water? tea? coffee?"

“Water,” Nat replied immediately. “Oh, prepare another one for Brother Kao, Than. In case he comes back in time to eat with us."

Than's hand that was about to place the glass on the marble counter stopped in midair. He considered for a full minute before answering.

“Sure, Brother Kao, are you still working?”

"Yes," Nat smiled happily. The dimples on both sides appeared like every time he talked about his first and last love. “I see this time he said that the bride doesn't even have half as much trouble as the groom's relatives. It makes your work with that bastard dull.”

“Really?” Than looked at the smile on his brother's face and smiled as well. Even though that smile didn't reach the eyes like it used to “Like this, Brother Kao is really tired.”

“Tired,” Nat sighed, “Yesterday Brother Kao came to complain to me that he was ordered to do overtime again because the pictures couldn't be finished in time.”

“So what do you do?” Than pursed his lips. “Aren't you so lonely like this?”

“Hey, no.” Nat poured two boxes of fried rice onto a large plate and put them in the microwave. Press to warm. Then turn to washing the cucumbers and tomatoes. “Anyway, Brother Kao comes back every night.”

“Ah, really?” Than looked at the plate of fried rice that was rotating on the microwave's turntable. before turning back to his elder again, “Brother Nat, if you ever get lonely, You can always come stay with me and P'Tawan, you know that, right? You can fuck James and fuck Jake.”

"Thank you, Than, but I'm really okay." Nat smiled at his brother. But this time, the smile began to fade from his black eyes little by little. “Then you have to stay here and wait for Brother Kao to come back. If Brother Kao comes back and there's no one to warm up the rice, what will you do? He is even more clumsy when he comes home from work late at night.”

“So, where is your music work going?” Than changed the topic of conversation. He picked up the cucumber that Nut had placed on the plate and cut it. "I saw Jake say that you haven't sent him much lately."

“Always,” Nat replied with a smile on his face that started to look more forced every minute. “It's like the inspiration has disappeared. I don't know how. During this time, I don't know what to wear. The lyrics are even sadder than when we broke up with P'Jom."

“Usually my inspiration is Brother Kao.”

Nat paused for a moment before turning and smiling and handing the tomato to Than.

“Yes, but lately Brother Kao's time to go home doesn't match up with his bedtime. So we always miss each other.”

“Brother Nath,” Than put down the knife in his hand and turned to look at his brother with eyes that were filled with tears and a face that showed unmistakable suffering. “Brother… you really don't remember or you pretend to remember? cannot?"

“What is it for us?” Nat laughed. He picked up a plate and put in the cucumbers and tomatoes that Than had sliced. “Remember what? Are you trying to play some kind of joke?”

Than closed his eyes, his eyelids shaking so that no one could tell he was suppressing his emotions.

"It was about 2 years ago."

“That P'Kao moved in with you?” Nat picked up three plates with cucumbers and tomatoes and put them on the dining table. “Remember, I'm so happy I died. At that time, I didn't even think that Brother and Brother Kao would have been together for this long. I still remember that time when P'Kao said that he wanted to move in together. Brother Kao was so embarrassed that he could only say, “

Do you want to use the same house key?" Brother Kao was really cute back then--"

“P'Nat, that was 4 years ago.”

Nat's smile faltered after being interrupted by Than. The hand holding the last plate that was about to be placed on the table where he normally sat stopped. He slowly put down the last plate and turned to Than, who was beginning to have tears streaming down his cheeks.

"4 years…? That's funny. How can it be 4 years?" Nat laughed forcibly. His eyes began to wander, not staying in one place. “If 4 years ago was when you and Tawan started dating.”

“That was 6 years ago, Nat,” Than said, then slowly walked up to Nat and hugged him from behind. “Nut… it's already 2019.”

“That's funny, Than,” Nat said, then removed Than's hand from his own waist. Then he turned to grab a plate from the microwave. “Where is it? It's 2017.”

Than had no words to reply. He could only look sadly at his older brother who was setting a plate of fried rice on the table. Before deciding to walk away, she turned to tell her brother with a smile through tears.

“P'Nat, P' Kao will never come back. I know this myself.”

“Come back, Sithan,” Nat confirmed without taking his eyes off the plate of fried rice on the table in front of Kao. But his voice began to shake. “Phi Kao just goes to work himself. I'll be back soon.”

“Do you remember what happened two years ago today?”

“Than, stop.” Nat closed her eyes and furrowed her brows almost together. The happy expression disappeared as soon as he heard his younger brother's question.

“You and Brother Kao are driving to Pattaya together,” Than continued through tears. The bass began to take on a higher tone as emotion began to come out as patience decreased. “And there were lots of cars on the road during that time because it was a holiday.”

"Than, I don't want to listen," Nat said softly. The eyes that turned to look at Than were red and filled with unmistakable sorrow.

“But you have to listen!” Than grabbed both of his older brother's shoulders. His voice began to tremble with emotions he couldn't contain. Both from the image of the older brother in front of him and retracing the story of the event that changed their lives forever. "You have to listen, or you'll never move on!!"

Nat looked at Than without saying anything. But his tear-stained face did not weaken Than's determination.

“That day, the car behind you guys exploded,” Than continued, his voice shaking and almost incomprehensible. “The reason is because the car is a second-hand car that the owner bought at a very cheap price and didn't check the condition before actually driving it. So I didn't know there was a problem with the car."

“When that car exploded The elders took the car and left the spot and ran out to the point where there was an emergency phone. Then I went down and called the police for help because there was no telephone signal in that area. But unexpected events happened.”

“The car driving behind swerved to avoid the car that had exploded and crashed into the brothers' car.”

Than paused his story to look at Nat's reaction. But Nat kept his head down. Than couldn't see what his brother's expression was.

“The car slammed into the driver's seat,” Than continued, voice barely above a whisper. “Brother Kao left immediately after being hit.”

“Than, who are you talking to?” Another familiar voice called out, causing Than to turn quickly towards the source of the sound coming from the living room.

“P'Tawan,” Than smiled faintly at the young man he loved and released his hand from his brother's shoulder. "How did you come in?"

“You didn't lock the door.” Tawan looked at Than's condition and let out a long sigh. Long legs walked towards Than and pulled him into a hug. "I told you you had to stay here."

“I already told you that I came to talk to Nat.” Than turned to look at Nat. But Nat still kept her head down. “If you leave Nat alone today. We don't know what will happen. Please tell P'Nat that P'Kao has gone. Brother Nat will finally be able to accept it. He doesn't listen to me. But he might be willing to listen to you.”

The sun stopped.

“Nat?”

"Yes, P'Nat, this is your best friend." Than pulled away and looked at the sun in bewilderment. “Why do you look so shocked?”

“Than,” Tawan placed both hands on the younger man's face. His eyes glanced at the dining table. “There is no one here but the two of us.”

“What do you mean? Pee Nat is standing over there,” Than said, pointing his finger at Nat. who was looking up at Than with pity “Then why is Nat looking at me like that?”

"Than, I think we're done eating and going back to rest," Nat said softly. His smile looked so sad that Than felt like crying when he saw his older brother who used to smile with every little happiness in the world have to be so sad. "I'll stay and wait for Brother Kao. You can stay."

“Let's go find something to eat, let's go back,” said Tawan, who had his back turned to Nat, and gently pressed his lips to Than's. "Don't forget that tomorrow we still have to go see P'Jom early in the morning."

“Seriously, I really don't want to see my best friend kiss my younger brother like this,” Nat said, sitting down in his usual seat. “But come on, the sun loves me very much, so I can accept it. Eh! Please send my condolences to Brother Jom. Is Brother Chom still running the clinic day and night? Both Brother Chom and Brother Kao have never been able to leave their old habits.”

“P'Jom is fine,” Than replied to Nat, then turned back to Tawan who seemed to be getting more worried every minute. “P'Tawan, why do I have to go see P'Jom?”

“You already know the answer, little brother,” Nat said with a bitter smile from his seat at the dinner table. The plates and glasses that had been in front disappeared, as did the things that Nat had prepared just moments before.

“Oh,” Tawan averted his eyes from Than. He turned to look at the single empty plate on the dining table. “Brother Jom misses you.”

"You know that's not the real reason, Than," Nat stood up from his chair. Then walked through the sun straight to Than. who was gaping and looking at his own brother From the beginning Nat wore Ryan pattern pajamas. Characters that he likes heavily Nat's outfit turned out to be a long-sleeved white shirt and light brown 3/4 pants with a blood stain running from his shoulder all the way down his left leg. "People who haven't moved on yet..."

“It is you.”

A/N:

That is, I got the question from @.

twiceamonth_twt

I was told to include three keywords: "groom", "last love", "sad". I was wanting to try writing a short story like this, so I took the opportunity to try it out. We haven't used a good kid in a long time. I feel like a real nub.

Thank you for coming to read. Please feel free to comment. But don't forget to use polite language. Wright is subtle.
