Dreaming of yesterday
By: Son Sam Song Bai
The soft afternoon sunlight streams through the large open window. Yothit sat looking out at the blue sky that was slowly turning into a deep blue. He thought about the past time. A life that used to be both a dream and a reality which is full of success Relentless work in his company
It brought him fame, money, and honor, but he felt empty. It's like there's something missing.
In his late forties, Yothit achieved success in every field that many envied. But true happiness never came to him. A feeling of burnout took over. It was as if the world that had once been bright was gradually shrouded in darkness. The dream that he thought he was chasing all along seemed so far away. He didn't know where to find it.
“Is this life really mine?” Yothit muttered to himself as he looked at the sky that slowly disappeared.
As he lost himself in his thoughts, his ears suddenly heard something different. It was the sound of birds singing. The sound of the wind blowing through the trees and the scent of flowers blowing in the breeze, even though he was sure he wasn't in the garden. Or close to any nature. Suddenly, his surroundings began to blur.
And as soon as he opened his eyes again He found himself no longer in his familiar office.
Yothit stood amidst a strangely familiar atmosphere. He felt as if he had been transported to another time. The moment when certain feelings began to stir in my heart. The place where he stood appeared to be a large square next to a school. Children and teenagers in school uniforms walked by around him, laughter.
The sound of chatter laced with the brightness of youth It made Yothit remember his past.
“Here it is…” He muttered to himself, looking around in bewilderment. This is his high school. The school he graduated from was more than thirty years ago.
Old memories began to return little by little. during that time He was just an ordinary young man who didn't understand much about life. And one of the memories that remain in his heart is Sirin. The girl he had been in love with since childhood. But that love story turned out to be his biggest disappointment.
The events of that day are still clear in my memory. Make him feel infinitely sad.
“Why did we come back here again?” Yothit asked himself uncertainly.
As he stood there, confused as to what had happened. Sirin appeared. She was still the bright girl he remembered well. Her white skin pretty face And the delicate, nurturing demeanor remains the same. It was as if time had never moved on for her.
Sirin stood not far from Yothit. She looked at him with the gentle smile that had made his heart flutter in the past. Yothit's heart trembled slightly as she approached.
“Yothit... What's wrong with you? Why are you standing there like that?” Her voice was as soft and friendly as ever.
Yothit was silent for a moment before answering. "do not have anything... I just missed something.”
Sirin chuckled softly, "You like to think a lot as usual."
Yothit's feelings were all mixed up. He remembered how much this past event had hurt him. On that day, he had tried to confess his love to Sirin. But she didn't reciprocate his feelings. And that caused their relationship to end badly.
But coming back this time was different. Yothit senses a new opportunity. A chance to make everything better He already knows what life he wants. It is not success measured by fame or money. But it is true love and happiness.
"Sirin..." Yothit called her name in a gentler voice than before. He decided to change his past. "I have something I want to tell you."
Sirin turned to look at him questioningly, "What is it?"
Yothit took a deep breath, “Once, I loved you, and I was sad that I couldn't express my feelings to you properly. But today, I know that love doesn't mean possession or acceptance. It is about accepting what has happened and the happiness that comes from getting to know each other.”
Sirin listened with a surprised expression. She didn't answer immediately. But a soft smile appeared on her face.
“I don't know how you'll feel about what I said. But this is what I want you to know,” Yothit said sincerely.
Sirin smiled, "I'm glad you dared to tell me this, Yothit. Love is a complicated matter. But you understand it in your own way. I hope that we remember this good time together.”
At that moment, Yothit felt a sense of relief. It was as if a burden that had been carried in my heart for a long time had been lifted. He learns that being happy doesn't mean going back and fixing the past. It is about accepting the past and moving forward into the future.
Light returned to the office again. Yothit opened his eyes, but this time he was not alone. The sound of medical equipment buzzed around him. The bed he was lying on moved gently before he heard the nurse's voice call out, "Miss Yothit, are you awake now?"
He looked around, trying to understand what was happening. His head was still dizzy. And he found himself in the hospital. The room is white and clean. His body was tired.
“What happened?” Yothit asked in a hoarse voice.
The nurse smiled gently. “You just recovered from brain surgery. After an accident that left you unconscious for several days.”
Yothit frowned. The memories he had just experienced floated back in confusion. How is it possible? A time he thought he had gone back to Was it just a dream from an unconscious state?
while Yothit was still lying on the bed. Looking at the door that had been opened He saw a man in a suit walking in. The man had a familiar face. Although he wasn't quite sure yet. But when the man approached Yothit realized who it was.
"Thana..." Yothit said in a low voice. That man was his best friend in high school. Friends who have been through many times together. Including events in the past that Yothit recently "rewinded" to experience.
"Yothit is awake now," Thana said with a soft smile as he walked in and sat beside the bed.
“What happened here? Why am I here?” Yothit asked in confusion. Even after hearing from the nurse that he had an accident But his memory was still confusing as to how the dream related to the events that had transpired.
Thana was silent for a moment. before sighing softly, “You were in a car accident. Don't you remember? He drove his car into a big tree. At that time we were all very worried.”
“Then... then I... I saw Sirin. I have seen you again..." Yothit muttered with a feeling filled with dreams and reality mixed together.
Thana listened quietly before speaking in a serious tone, “Sirin... You passed away, Yothit, many years ago. when she was seriously ill"
Those words were like a sharp knife cutting through Yothit's heart. He looked at Thana with eyes filled with confusion and disbelief, “No… it's not true! I just met you I just talked to her She still smiles at me!”
Thana shook her head lightly, “That was just a dream. After falling asleep in a coma It may be a result of surgery. Or something that you've always had in mind. Sirin used to be an important person in your life. And you probably still miss you a lot. But she really has been gone for a long time.”
Yothit was stunned. Everything he had just experienced was too clear to be just a dream. The feeling was so real that he couldn't accept it as just a hallucination from his injury. He doesn't understand what is real and what is fantasy.
"But I... I feel it. I feel it's real..." he muttered.
Thana gently touched his shoulder, “Maybe what you saw in your dream. It might be goodbye Sometimes dreams help us accept painful truths more easily.”
Yothit was silent for a moment. The empty feeling that had plagued him for so many years came flooding back again. But this time it was tinged with a deeper sadness. Meeting Sirin in his dream might be his last chance to see her. Even though it wasn't the truth as he thought. But it also made him learn how to let go.
"Thank you for telling me..." Yothit finally spoke up. With a deep sigh
Thana nodded, “You have to take good care of yourself. Don't let the past hurt you again. Life can still go on.”
Yothit slowly closed his eyes, reflecting on the mix of dreams and reality. He still felt the warmth in Sirin's smile that had given him hope. Even if it's just a dream But in that dream He saw her again. Said things he never had a chance to say And it might be enough to make him move past his past.
But at the same time Some doubts still linger in my mind.
One night after that Yothit returns to the house. While he was sitting in the living room He glanced at an old box on a bookshelf that he hadn't opened in years. It was a box where he kept important things from the past. Things that have sentimental value He decided to take it down and open it.
In it were old photographs, letters from friends. and souvenirs from childhood As he was flipping through the contents of the box He found a pale envelope that looked like it was hidden among a pile of other papers. He had never seen this envelope before.
When he opened it, he found that it was a letter from Sirin. He read the letter slowly.
“Yothit... I regret never telling you the truth. The feelings I have for you are more than you could ever know, but I was afraid. I was afraid of hurting you at that time, but now... I don't know if I'll ever have the chance to tell you again. I hope one day you will understand everything.”
Tears welled up in Yothit's eyes as he read the letter. A truth he never knew before. How great is Sirin's love for him? But she never told him. And he never knew
"It's all too late..." He muttered to himself. Along with feeling that his heart was heavier than ever.
But then suddenly The soft chirping of birds sounded from the window. As if to warn him that Life still moves on. Even though the past has left scars But it is just one chapter of life.
