As has been believed for hundreds of years, The demonstration of the power of the arhats in Buddhism is "wrong", with references to events in the records of the Buddha's time, which are part of the history of Venerable Pindolbharadvāja Thera (Japanese called "binsuru"). ") which showed the power of flying into the air to receive the sandalwood alms bowl as per the challenge of the rich man of Rajagaha, Magadha.

And it was from this incident that Lord Gotama's Buddha's words were "cut down" and used as an excuse to forbid the Arahants from showing their powers! events at that time I would like to paraphrase (some parts of the message) as follows:

At one time, when the Blessed One Residing at Phra Weluvan Mahavihar, Rajagaha, there was a wealthy man (called by the locals as The wealthy king wanted to swim in the Ganges River. So he had his servants stretch out a net to form a fence around the place where he was bathing. To prevent danger from various aquatic animals At that time, a red sandalwood tree appeared on the bank above the water.

The roots were toppled by water, flowed downstream, and the current hit hard objects, broken into small pieces and large pieces scattered throughout the water. One of them was a button that had broken off. Rolling against the rocks and gravel, the sand turns into fine round lumps. And there was moss all around and flowing onto the net. The rich man let the people who examined it know that it was red sandalwood and thought that

“Red sandalwood There are many in our house. What should we do with this red sandalwood?”

The rich man had not yet attained right view. Still not a bigot Be neutral So it occurred to me that

“In this world there are many people who boast that they are Arahants. We still do not know exactly who is an Arahant, so we thought that we should have a technician turn this red sandalwood knob and make it into an alms bowl and hang it on the end of a bamboo stick, connecting them to a height of 15 wa (30 meters). We will give the alms as alms. The rest of the lathe we will keep for use.”

After that, the king had the monk turn the alms bowl with the sandalwood button. Then put the saplings and hang them at the end of the bamboo, tied together up. Then announced (with neutrality in belief) that

“Who is an Arahant in this world? Come "by the air" and take that alms bowl. Anyone who can hold that bowl (in this way) will be believed to be an Arahant. I'm ready with my wife. and the child will seek refuge in him throughout his life.”

At that time, the news of the royal millionaire's announcement of defiance spread. The 6 teachers' offices are

1.Puraṇakassapa

2. Makkhali Kosal

3. Achitkasakamphon

4. Sanchaiwelatthabutra

5. Pakuddhakaccayaana

6.Nikon Natthaputra (son of a dancer?)

They all wanted to receive the red sandalwood alms bowl. At that time, Purana Kassapa went to the Rājakha Setthi and said:

“Reverend Brother, it is I who is an Arahant and has power. Please give alms to me.”

The wealthy king confirmed that

“When you want to get If Your Majesty is an Arahant and has power, then come through the air and remove the bowl that I have given you (with the power that you have) and go.”

Later, Makkhali Kosala Mr. Achitkasakamphon He is Pakudakaccaya. Mr. Sanchai Velattabutra Venerable Nikorn Natthaputra He went to see the rich man and said:

“Reverend Brother, it is I who is an Arahant and has power. Please give alms to me.”

The millionaire replied:

“Sir, if Your Majesty is an Arahant and has power, then come through the air and remove the bowl that I have given you (with your power and power).

(In conclusion, if you want it, just fly up and get it yourself!)

When it came to the 6th day of Nikorntha Natthaputra He sent his disciple to tell the rich man that

“This bowl is worthy of our teacher. Don't let yourself show off your flying power because of just one bowl, which is such a small object. Give it to our teacher.”

The millionaire still confirmed the same. Nikon Natthaputra then planned with his disciples:

“When we make a gesture of raising our hands and feet, we show signs of flying up and getting the alms bowl. Take hold of My hands and feet and say forbiddenly: Why did Master do this? Don't you show the virtues of Arahantship that were hidden because of just this bowl.”

Once the plan has been agreed upon So he went to ask for alms with the rich man. When receiving the same rejection So he pretended to fly up and get the alms bowl. All the disciples gathered together to stop him and hold him back. said as agreed upon Nikon Natthabut then said to the rich man,

“We will fly up and get alms. But the disciples refused to hold him back like this. Therefore, please give us alms.”

The rich man still refused to give in as before. The Deerthir tried for 6 days but still didn't get any alms.

In the morning of the 7th day, Venerable Maha Moggallana and Venerable Pindol Bhāradvāja Dominating Antarawasaka in the morning Then he took his alms bowl and robes and went to receive alms in the city of Rajagaha. The real one Phra Pindolbharadvāja is an Arahant and has power. Even Venerable Maha Moggallana was an Arahant and had powers in both.

He stood in a robe on a paving stone. I heard the voices of the gangsters saying,

“In the past, the six teachers went around boasting that "I am an Arahant." But when the rich man of Rajagaha raised the alms bowl and said, "If Arahants still existed, Come by air and take this bowl." Until 7 days into today. I did not see a single person fly up into the air, take the alms bowl that the rich man had hung up and show himself to be an Arahant.

Today we know that There are no arhats in the world.”

Venerable Moggallana heard this. So he said to Phra Pindolbharadvāja:

“Senior Bharadvāja, have you heard the words of these thugs? These thugs speak like they are insulting Buddhism. You are very powerful, very powerful, go and take the alms bowl from the air.”

Venerable Phra Pindolbharadvāja So he said to Venerable Maha Moggallana:

“Senior Moggallana, you appear to be superior to all the mighty disciples. You should take that bowl. But when you don't accept it, I will accept it.”

(It is estimated that Venerable Maha Moggallana is much more senior than Venerable Pindolbharadvāja. Venerable Pindolbharadvāja was considerate of the elders. But Venerable Moggallana wanted Venerable Pindalabhāradvāja to take charge of the matter. So he told Venerable Phra Pindolbharadvāja to go and receive alms instead.)

Finally (after reaching a conclusion), Venerable Pindolabhāradvāja accepted Maha Moggallana's words and entered the fourth jhana samādhi, which is the basis of Abhiññā. Performed magical powers, flying up into the sky (air) along with a paving stone (width-length-height) of about 3 kavut (12000 meters) that stood on it and floated up in the air like cotton.

Flying around Rajagaha 7 times, causing the stone paving to be like a covering for the whole city. The people of the city were afraid that the rock would fall on them, so they raised a basket over their heads and went to hide in that place (the basket probably helped) and begged Venerable Phindolabharadvāja to hold on to the rock. Let it not fall and bring destruction upon the people of the city.

Venerable Pindolabhāradvāja used his toe and threw the stone away. The stone was returned to its original place. Venerable Pindolabhāradvā came down and stood in the blind of a rich man's house. The wealthy king and his wife stood in their house. Supporting Anchali, worship and invite him to say

“Sir, may Your Majesty, Bharadvāja, be enshrined in this house of mine.”

Venerable Pindolbharadvāja was enshrined in the house of the Raja Mahasetthi. At that time, the wealthy king received the alms bowl from Venerable Pindolbharadvāja's hand and prepared a full supply of exquisite and valuable chewing items to offer to Venerable Pindalabharadvāja.

Venerable Pindolbharadvāja received the alms bowl and went to the monastery. The villagers heard the news that Venerable Pindolbharadvā had released the bowl of a wealthy king. And those villagers had a loud noise. Following Phra Pindolbharadvāja behind him, he implored him to show him some miracles. The Elder then performed the show as invited.

The Grand Master heard the noise. So he asked Ananda:

The Lord Buddha heard a loud noise. Then he asked Venerable Ananda:

“Anon, that is a loud noise. What's the matter?”

Venerable Ananda said:

“My Lord Buddha. Phra Pindolbharadvā removed the alms bowl. of the wealthy king The villagers heard the news that Venerable Phra Pindolbharadvāja The rich man's bowl was removed. So they followed Venerable Phra Pindolbharadvājama behind him in a noisy manner. Lord Buddha This loud, uproarious sound is that sound, Lord Buddha.”

Then the Lord Buddha ordered a meeting of monks on that basis and on that basis. Then he asked Venerable Pindolbharadvāja:

“Bharadvāja, is the news that she removed the rich king's alms bowl?”

Phra Pindolbharadhavacha responded that

“True, my Lord Buddha.”

The Lord Buddha criticized him saying,

“Bhāradvāja, your actions are not appropriate, not suitable, not appropriate, not the activity of a monk, cannot be used, should not be done. Why did you show the miraculous power of the highest human Dhamma to the lay people because of the wooden bowl? which is like a corpse Just as Mātukam reveals secret things because of wealth, which is like a corpse, so do you too.

He demonstrated miraculous powers, which is the highest human Dhamma, to the lay people because of the wooden bowl which was like a corpse. Her actions are not for the faith of a community that does not yet have faith.”

Then he gave a Dhamma talk and told the monks:

“Look, monks. Monks should not show the miraculous powers, which are the highest human virtues, to laypeople (due to gain and worship). There's this sandalwood alms bowl, etc.!!!) Any picture shown must be a violation of every rule. Look, monks. You are to break that wooden bowl, grind it into fine pieces, and use it as medicine for the eyes of the monks.

Monks should not use wooden bowls. Anyone who uses them must commit a violation of every rule.”

Moreover, when there are many times the Buddha's words support him saying, Miraculous power is the most outstanding dharma of mankind. Then why do you have to prohibit the display of power for laypeople???

The answer is because the performance of miraculous powers in the hope of receiving results is merit. It does not create faith and belief in communities that do not yet believe in religion.

For this reason Therefore, there is a Buddha's simile comparing the display of power with the intention of gaining wealth. It is just a kind of acrobatics show, which is no different from the way a matukam shows off secret items in exchange for wealth. Because if it were not for the purpose of acting for the intention of wanting wealth then

There would certainly be comparisons made to other things which were not related to the acquisition of wealth. This is the reason for the simile.

In addition, from analyzing the data from this event, can be specified that

If any monk demonstrates his power with sincerity and does not hope for any gain, he will worship him. But there were people who brought good fortune to pay homage to and offer from that display of power. Lord Gotama allowed the destruction of the sacred fortune to confirm his sincerity in demonstrating that power himself.

Moreover, for those who intend to demonstrate their power with the intention of gaining wealth, they will pay homage. There is a clear example of this: Phra Devadatta (who received the Buddha's prophecy that In the distant future, he will attain the Pacceka Buddha. [This Pacceka Buddha The maximum number was 500. His name was Atthisara).

Because after Phra Devadatta (who had attained a certain level of Dhamma to the point of being able to show his power) had shown various powers to the point of attracting faith and fortune to pay homage from Prince Ajātasatthu, he was able to encourage Prince Ajātasatthu to seize power and usurp the throne. of King Bimbisara and appointed himself as King Ajatasattu to rule the Magadha region instead and made the Magadha region completely become the area of influence of Devadatta.

Devadatta also lost his power of meditation and his powers were no longer able to show his power. which confirms that The final point of the person who performs the power with the intention of gaining wealth and worship is the complete loss of the power of meditation and power. This is why there is a commandment in the Vinaya prohibiting monks from performing the power because of Fortune worship to prevent wrong views will occur just like Devadatta did.

Because after Devadatta had lost his power of meditation and power, But they were still able to use their power, influence and wealth to rule the Sangha in the Magadha region. And after the Magadha region was ruled by King Ajatasattu, the assassination of Maha Moggallana, who was Lord Gotama's left apostle, occurred.

But this news of the assassination of an important person in the support of Buddhism in Bihar turned out to be just a small piece of news. The case was closed in a matter of days and only a few lines were recorded. The important meaning of this hidden danger in the Magadha region can be referenced from the Buddha's saying, which says, "The city of Rajagaha (of the Magadha region)

Even normal tires are full of "human beings". Another thing is that on the day when Venerable Maha Moggallana was secretly attacked, It falls on the day that he just came out of the 7 days and 7 nights of meditation to create benefits called "immediate merit results" which is a tradition of merit that gives quick and very large results (receiving merit immediately on the day of doing it). As)

And in general, when under the power of jhana samādhi, the power of jhana will protect the body from any harm (just as it protected Sariputta when he was hit on the head by the giant Nanthaka with a club). If you are not in meditation then The giant club definitely wouldn't have such a light effect. Because they used a club to hit him on the head with full force.

Its strength can cause an 8-foot-tall elephant to sink into the ground, or it can destroy the top of a large mountain. The reflection then reverted back to the giant Nanthaka himself, resulting in him immediately sinking into the abyss. While Sāriputra only "felt a little pain in his head"), but when he had left the 7 days and 7 nights of meditation,

His physical condition was no different from that of an ordinary person who had gone without food and water for 7 days and 7 nights (the difference from an ordinary person is that his endurance was many times greater than that of an ordinary person). Therefore, it needed time to recover. Physical condition

But the fact that the group of people who attacked him came and waited at the right time three times, besides the matter of karma, It is possible that among those who entered and exited the monastery of Maha Moggallana during that time, there were "salt worms" who periodically sent news of his movements to the group of attackers. Therefore

When you are attacked after emerging from a new meditation retreat, your body, which is fragile, is like a snake shedding its skin or a butterfly that has just emerged from its chrysalis. Therefore it is easily damaged, that is, it breaks as finely as a grain of rice broken in half.

Some information about the background of Maha Moggallana's death.

For those who still strictly adhere to the rules of the Vinaya that prohibit this (superficial) display of power. There is an example of a case where a person adheres to the precepts of the Vinaya, but it is a case of taking something green which is not a demonstration of power, that is, Thao Erakapattanakaraj. who in the past were monks in the religion of Phra Kassapa, the fully realized Buddha in the past

But he fell into a slight offense that he did not express and took as his emotion at the time of his death, "I have impure morality." This mood of mental distress in the moment before his death resulted in the monk being born as a Naga. Its body is about the size of a stirrup boat. It is called "Erakpatta", similar to that it is the result of adhering to theory rather than adhering to results in actual practice, because

The birth of a senior Naga comes from the fact that once a human being had trained himself to the point of reaching a certain level of Dhamma. Instead, they cling to a few rules that are based on their emotions rather than the results of their practice. causing instead of being reborn in a higher plane of existence than Chakavacarabhumi There is a Brahma level, for example. Instead, he had to be reborn as a Naga in the Catumahārājikā class, which is the lowest level of Chakāmavacarabhumi.

But due to the great merit that he had practiced as a human being, it has resulted in the Nagas having a lifespan that is much longer than normal (some of them have lived for a kalpa, while the standard lifespan of the Chatumahārājikā is 500 divine years). or that is only 9 million years in the human world)

Therefore, the three paths in the harp should not be held too tightly or too loosely by any criteria. Maintain oneself in the middle path according to the Buddha's words. Therefore, it is the most appropriate reason for maintaining a way of life.

Another thing Phra Pilinthawatcha himself He also used to show his power to help the family of little Tarika without asking for permission first. This event occurred in the southern district of Bihar before Devadatta was able to expand his influence.

The elder monk gave a golden garland to the baby girl.

At that time, Venerable Pilindavaccha became a Kulupka monk (that is, the monk he supported and was a regular adviser to the family. Simply put, his main duty was to help the people of society in his area of responsibility, not just accepting but Alms only or was it only sitting and standing sermons) in that village?

Because King Bimbisara had given him care.) One morning, he was already occupying Antaravasaka. Carrying alms bowls and robes, he went to collect alms at Ban Pilintawatcha Subdistrict. At that time there was entertainment in that village. The children decorated their bodies with flowers and were enjoying the entertainment. Venerable Pilindawatcha went to collect alms along the lanes in the village of Ban Pilintawatcha (

His name was also used as the name of the area for which he was responsible.) He entered the house of one of the temple workers. Then he sat on the seat that had been offered to him.

At that time the daughter of the woman who had taken the measurements saw the other children adorning themselves with flowers and cried to her mother, Please give me flowers. Please give me clothing.

Venerable Pilindavaccha then asked the woman who worked at the temple: What is this girl crying out for?

She said, "Sir, this girl saw other children decorating their bodies with flowers." So I begged for flowers. I said, "I am a poor person, where do I get flowers?" Where do you get the decorations from?

Venerable Pilindavaccha took a bunch of grass and handed it to the girl's mother and said: You shall put this bunch of grass on the girl's head. When she received a coil of grass, she put it on the girl's head. Immediately, that coil of grass turned into a golden flower wreath, very beautiful, pleasing to the eye, admirable. Such a wreath of golden flowers.

Even in the palace, there was none (Pilindavaccha consecrated a coil of grass as an ornament, a golden flower wreath, so beautiful that even in the palace there was none to be seen)

Then Mrs. Tarika wore a gold flower headdress and went to the entertainment festival. The soldiers saw this and thought that Tarika must have stolen something from the palace. Because a gold wreath is this beautiful, a poor person should not be able to wear it. So he went and told King Bimbisara that, by his grace, the golden flower wreaths at the houses of the temple workers at Pilinthawatcha village were very beautiful, worth looking at, admiring.

Even in the royal palace, there is none. He is a miserable person, where can he get it? It must have been theft for sure.

King Bimbisara then ordered the family of the temple workers to be imprisoned (imprisoned and forgotten without trial).

The next morning Venerable Pilindawatcha reigned over Antaravasaka and then took his alms bowl and robe to go to receive alms at the village of Ban Pilindawatcha. When going for alms along the alleys in Ban Pilintawatcha Subdistrict, he walked. Passed through the house of that temple worker. Then he asked the familiar person, Where did the family of people who worked at this temple go?

Those people said to him, He was ordered to be imprisoned. Because of the story of the golden flower, sir.

Phra Pilindavaccha knew this and entered the palace. Sitting on the seat that was offered to him

At that time, King Bimbisara He went to see Venerable Pilindavaccha. He bowed and sat on one side of the royal seat.

Venerable Pilindavacha asked King Bimbisara, asking his blessing, for what reason were the families of temple workers ordered to be imprisoned?

King Bimbisara replied: Your Majesty Because in his house there was a golden flower wreath very beautiful, pleasing to the eye, admirable, even in the palace there were none. He is a poor man, where will he get it? It must have been obtained through theft for sure.

Venerable Pilindavacha then prayed to King Bimbisara's castle that it would be made of gold. At that moment the entire castle became gold. Then he offered a blessing and asked, "I would like to offer a blessing. This is only so much gold. Where did the Great King get it?" (showing his power to prove the real power of the Arahant)

He had a good sense of humor and pretended to ask.) and to protect and help the family of Mrs. Tarika who was imprisoned unfairly as part of her assigned duties.)

King Bimbisara said: I know This was the power of His Majesty, and he ordered the family of temple workers to be freed from the royal punishment.

Thera and the reasons for giving the Vinaya precepts

About Varanasi

At that time A family of lay followers of Venerable Pilindavacha in Varanasi. was robbed by robbers and two children were taken away by robbers At that time Venerable Pilindavacca brought the two children with power and put them in the palace. The villagers saw the two children and had great admiration for Phra Pilinthawatcha. This is the power of Phra Pilindavacca.

The monks gathered together, blaming and criticizing, saying, "Why did Venerable Pilindavacha bring back the child that had been taken away by the thieves? Then they reported this to the Blessed One." The Lord Buddha said: Look at all the monks. It is not an offense. Because of the power of the powerful monk

In this matter, Prof. Atthanich added clarity. Demonstration of the power to protect the kith and kin of noble monks No offense required Because it is a matter of "meditation", the Vinaya does not cover it.

Acharn Atthanich provided additional information.

Let it show (power) only when..

1. Has an internal nature

In the case of preaching.... In order to increase the faith of non-believers and make those who are already believers even more faithful. In the case of Venerable Chulapanthaka, he took up the duty of teaching the Dhamma to nuns as an example. He was not good at speaking...so he showed his power instead of teaching. Until the nuns were excited and entertained, impressed to the point of comparing the teachings of Venerable Ananda to the point that they were boring.

P'Chunlapanthaka's fight is unmatched. Exciting, stimulating, fun, woohoo.

2. Having an external appearance

...is the case of Venerable Santati Maha Amat, Venerable Ananda, when they passed away, they did not let anyone be the burden of managing their bodies. Venerable Ananda exploded the relics to spread on both sides of the river for the Buddhist community. Both sides collected them for worship. Don't let me feel disappointed. Get only one side or case Phra Thappha Mallaputra

Managed to burn his own body in the air without leaving any germs...that is, he didn't pray to the relics for anyone to worship at all. But it performed miracles. "He is his own refuge. Even though the death of Khandha and nirvana Do not let anyone be a burden, etc.

But the biggest challenge is not Santati Maha Amat. Playing together in broad daylight On a large square in the middle of the crowd of Phra Nakhon Savatthi It was a blessing to see...and that he had to pass away on the day he attained it...that was compensation for the life expectancy of those who died in the war that he killed so many to become a Maharaja for 7 days.

Then he set himself on fire. It is a relic confirming its existence in history.

Ye Dhammā hetuppabhavā tesaṃ yeṃ tathāgato tesanca yo nirodho ca evaṃ vādī mahāsamano.

Which of these things arises from a cause? The Tathagata explained the reasons for those things. including the extinction of those things as well The high priest said this.

The Vinaya itself is the same. When referring to which of the Vinaya? You should also refer to the reason for giving the Vinaya commandment in that section. Otherwise, the Vinaya law will become a continuous prohibition without any cause or reason to support it, such as

In the case of prohibiting the taking of green things The full information is Prohibiting the taking of green things (plants) which are the haunts of the gods. The origin of the law is It was a request from one of the forest gods who had been destroyed by a monk who had destroyed a nearby tree. The angel then asked the Buddha for the monks. Refrain from destroying green things (

which is the dwelling place of the angels)

In the case of prohibiting the display of power The full information is Prohibiting the display of power for the purpose of making a fortune (that is, using it to make a living)

Establishing the discipline It is not an unreasonable prescription. Everything has its own reason. But throughout the past period Those who know (or pretend to be wise) choose to conceal and twist the reasons for enacting those disciplines.

According to the information on human origins from the Akkanya Sutta, it is stated that mutants (

Mutation)

It comes from the Brahma called Apasara Brahma, which is naturally powerful in nature. The manifestation of the power of an Arahant is to elevate one's status back to its original, natural state, which was previously a Brahma, and must be raised above the level of a Brahma if one wishes to achieve nirvana. Therefore, having power is a condition. that every achiever must face before entering the state ready for Nirvana.
